Toll technology has run amok (letter to the editor) - SILive.com

Technology sometimes makes fools of us in our pell-mell rush to computerize everything.

New York eliminated bridge toll takers where, at one time, all you had to do was hand someone cash, drive away and that was it.

Now, expensive cameras (which need people to maintain them) photograph your license. The Port Authority contacts a contractor, who prints and mails a bill. That bill goes to the motorist, who sends it back with a check - requiring the post office to pick up the bill, sort it, have a mailman deliver it and have him pick up the return letter for delivery to the agency (meaning the mail gets sorted a second time). The post office has other workers do whatever record-keeping they do. The motorist must take time to write a check and record it in his transaction booklet. The bank has an employee cash the check and others perform the requisite record-keeping/accounting for the bank. And, finally, after all that, after the efforts of one or two dozen people, the toll is paid.

This is technology running amok; a case where our love of computers has interfered with logic.
